Catholic parish church St. Margareta of the parish community Alftal
Hontheim is mentioned for the first time in the archbishop's rights in 1250. Until 1803, the parish of Hontheim included, besides the current branches Wispelt and Krinkhof, also Olkenbach with the nearby chapel of Heinzerath. In 1803, Olkenbach and Heinzerath were assigned to the parish of Bausendorf.
The parish church was consecrated on December 13, 1736, by Auxiliary Bishop Lothar Friedrich von Nalbach. In 1852, during a fire that claimed 20 houses, the church was also affected, with only the choir remaining intact. The current structure was built between 1854 and 1856.
The patroness of the church was always St. Margaret. The high altar was dedicated to her, the side altar on the gospel side to St. Lucia, and on the epistle side to St. Rochus and St. Sebastian. Lucia and Sebastian are still considered secondary patrons today. A stone tabernacle of the high altar with the year 1665 has been preserved and was walled into the outer wall of the choir in 1846; it depicts the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of the Lord. In 1970, it was removed from the outer wall and, after a long restoration period, the retable returned to the church in 2002. The choir also features a Gothic stone sacrament house.
