Wine in the Mosel region

It’s possible to have a Mosel holiday without wine – but it’s only half as much fun! The region’s mineral slate soil and mild climate produce top quality wines – predominantly Riesling. Fine and elegant notes are the distinguishing characteristics of our wines. Traditional wineries and young winemakers scurry around the vineyards every day, devoted to the art of winemaking. Be they intergenerational, conventional or organic, there’s one thing that unites the winemakers of this region – their passion for excellent wines.

This is why the vineyards are also the defining element of our winegrowing landscape, something you can experience up close when walking or cycling. If you want to do more than just watch the winemaker at work in the vineyard, you can learn more about the production of wine during wine tastings or cellar tours. Wine and food go hand in hand – you can enjoy Mosel specialities in our restaurants and Strausse.
And if you want to experience even more winemaking, you can book holidays with winemakers.

What actually is a Strausse?

There are many different types of Strausse (wine taverns) in the Mosel region, some of which are located in vineyard gardens, in wine cellars, in wine barns or even in modern wine bars. The quaint tradition of the Strausse to hang a bouquet on the door as a sign that it is open has survived to this day and shows that this is a place where you can get wine from the winemaker’s own vineyards and also enjoy a small selection of food. They are usually seasonal and open from Easter until the end of October.

Wine tastings and wine experiences

Try the wine right where it grows. This is one of the highlights you should not miss in our region. Many winemakers offer wine tastings in the vineyard, on a guided wine walk, on a fun wagon trip through the vineyards, or even on the farm or in the historic wine cellar. Wherever you go, it’s an absolute must during your stay in Mosel. There is a phenomenal selection of excellent quality wines. If you don’t discover your favourite wine here, you only have yourself to blame. Cheers!

Holidays with winemakers

Do you want to spend your holiday with the winemaker? Many of our winegrowers also offer accommodation on their estate. This gives you an even better opportunity to watch the winemaker at work and taste the host’s wine right where it is made.
