Enter the twilight zone in a labyrinth of historical underground vaults, some over 100 m long and a few extending over several storeys.
The town of Traben-Trarbach was known around 1900 as one of the most important wine trading cities. It is remarkable that the Art Nouveau town on the Moselle was, at that time, the second largest wine transshipment point in Europe after the great French city of Bordeaux.
The reason for this extraordinary position lay in the high demand for Riesling wines and exports, particularly to Great Britain and overseas. This led to the establishment of over 100 wine companies. For this reason, in the second half of the 19th century, the capacity of the Traben-Trarbach wine cellars was increased, and large areas of the town center were vaulted like in no other Moselle community.
Experience some insights into the topic of wine and cellar management during this "special kind of city tour." As part of a tour offered year-round through the "Traben-Trarbach Underground," you will have the opportunity to visit various separate historical cellars.
