Rockfall near Kröv 1992 - Controlled detonation prevents disaster
In December 1991, it was determined that a rock mass of a total of 90,000 m³
was at risk of breaking off on the ridge of the opposite Mosel slope from Kröv. This could have triggered a massive tidal wave that would have flooded parts of the village of Kröv.
The rock was monitored for months, and as the cracks and fissures widened, the rock masses were brought down by a controlled explosion on May 23, 1992.
The explosion was a topic in the media for many days at that time. Even television reported on it. There were no damages or injuries.
The interest among the population in this event was enormous, and many onlookers besieged the Mosel village during those days.
The blasted rock is still visible but may not be entered.
