A tour of the underground kind through the mystical twilight of the Traben-Trarbach underworld and the cellar vaults is an exciting discovery of the history of historical viticulture and the old cellar techniques for the production of the noblest wine in the world, Riesling.
The town of Traben-Trarbach was known around 1900 as one of the most important wine trading cities. It is remarkable that this Art Nouveau town on the Moselle was, at that time, the second-largest wine trading place in Europe after the large French city of Bordeaux.
The reason for this exceptional position lay in the high demand for Riesling wines and exports, particularly to Great Britain and overseas. This led to the founding of over 100 wine companies. For this reason, in the second half of the 19th century, the capacity of the Traben-Trarbach wine cellars was increased, and, unlike any other Moselle community, large areas of the city center were vaulted underground.
Discover some insights into wine and cellar management on this "special city tour."
