Briedel "Bummkopf" Mountain Bike Tour via Enkirch

From the parking lot, ride through the village of Briedel and past the first vineyards. Cross the Briedelerbach stream and turn left there toward the first climbs of the tour. Now the nature of the route changes—from here on to Bernsberg, you’ll be riding on unpaved and sometimes challenging nature trails through the woods. Afterward, you’ll ride through the vineyards of the town of Burg (Moselle) toward Enkirch. In the village or after a short climb up into the vineyards, you can take a breather and enjoy the Moselle landscape. Now, about halfway through the route, you’ll head back up on gravel roads and nature trails to the Bummkopf and on to the “Schöne Aussicht” (Beautiful View). A magnificent view awaits you here—“beautiful,” as the name suggests. The viewpoint is located a few meters below the Bummkopf, which, at 422 m, is the highest point along the Hunsrück side of the Moselle. The route then follows flat nature trails, where you can catch your breath a bit, all the way to the Sündenkapellchen. Ahead of you now lies a longer descent that you can really enjoy. Please be mindful of pedestrians and hikers throughout the route, and especially at this point. Once you’re back in Briedel and have reached your starting point, the town invites you to linger. The town’s two gems are the medieval Eulenturm and the church.

Make sure to stay well-hydrated

Bring plenty of drinking water with you and drink regularly. It can get very hot in the summer, especially during hikes and bike rides along the Moselle.

Ticks

Check your body thoroughly after your outing and use a suitable insect repellent if necessary.

Oak processionary moth

Avoid contact with the caterpillars of the oak processionary moth and their webs. The fine stinging hairs can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.

Weather Check

Check the current weather forecast before starting your hike or bike ride. In case of thunderstorms, heavy rain, or strong winds, you should postpone your outing or end it early.

Stay on the marked trails

Stay on the marked hiking and biking trails. This protects nature and yourself and avoids unnecessary risks.

Forest Fire Risk

Pay special attention to the current wildfire risk, especially during the summer months. Avoid open fires and smoking in the forest as well as in areas with dry vegetation.

Dogs

Please keep dogs on a leash whenever possible and be considerate of wildlife, grazing animals, and other visitors.

Emergency

In an emergency, you can reach emergency services throughout Europe by dialing 112. Provide your location as precisely as possible and, if possible, use your cell phone’s location feature.

Sturdy Footwear

Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear on hiking trails. Nature trails, slate paths, and steep vineyard trails can be slippery, especially after rain.

Headwear

Wear a hat in warm weather. There are very few shaded areas, especially on the open trails through the vineyards.

Sun Protection

Apply plenty of sunscreen with an appropriate SPF and protect yourself from intense sunlight.

In Briedel and Enkirch, you'll find not only the local tourist information offices but also a number of restaurants and wineries.

From the north, coming from Cologne or Bonn

Take the A61 to the Emmelshausen exit, then take the B327

From the south, coming from Mannheim

Take the A61 to the Rheinböllen exit, then take the B50

From the west, coming from Luxembourg and Trier

Take the A48 to the Wittlich exit, then take the B53 along the Moselle

Parking is available along Moselstraße, right next to the starting point at Balduinsplatz.

Other starting points: the “Am Moselufer” parking lot in Enkirch, as well as the Bummkopf and Sündhaus parking lots (both on the K 52).

From Briedel: Take the train to Bullay and then take bus line 720 to Briedel (Note: Bicycles are not allowed on the bus!). Alternatively: Cycle to Bullay via the Moselle Cycle Route.

From Enkirch: Take the Mosel-Wein-Bahn from Bullay to Traben-Trarbach.
