A moderate hike through vineyards and deciduous forest. Wonderful views of the Mosel valley on the descent.

There are ups and downs, but the distance is only half as far as along the Mosel.

Past the Kleinforst grill hut, through the vineyards below Klosterberg, then mostly gently uphill through open deciduous forest to the B50. Shortly after crossing it, on the right a rest area with spectacular views upstream and downstream of the Mosel. Through the village "Schäferei" and downhill through the Bernkastel vineyards, we first reach the city gate, then the market square of Bernkastel.

General information

Directions

Start at the pier in Wolf ... downstream Mosel along the Mosel riverbank to Klosterbergstrasse ... follow Klosterbergstrasse ... at the parking lot and grill hut "Kleinforst" bear half left uphill and through the vineyards below the monastery. At the start of the forest we have to overcome a short steep section again, then it goes 2 1/2 km gently uphill, mostly through deciduous forest, at the end between meadows.

After crossing the B50 on the wild bridge, we turn left, a short stretch parallel - but with distance - to the B50. In between on the right a rest area, at the edge of which we have a wonderful view upstream and downstream of the Mosel. Then half right down the street and through the village Schäferei. Here there are some opportunities to stop for refreshments. Shortly before the end of the village we turn right onto the path to Bernkastel and have vineyards, the Mosel, Bernkastel and Kues in front of us. Past an old Jewish cemetery in the middle of the vineyards, we follow the steep path down to the Mosel valley ... through the arches of the former city fortifications we reach the Bärenbrunnen and the pedestrian zone.

Equipment

The path can be walked well in sturdy footwear.

Tip

Those who have time and desire to visit a cozy forest inn turn sharply left just behind Schäferei and follow the signpost to the inn "Eiserne Weinkarte"
