Attention cultural enthusiasts: with the Grevenburg castle ruins, the remains of Starkenburg, and the Mont Royal fortress ruins, you can deeply immerse yourself in history
From Traben-Trarbach, the first climb to Grevenburg and the lookout point "Himmelspforte" above it must first be mastered. From there, it goes over forest and field paths to Starkenburg. Behind the excursion restaurant "Schöne Aussicht," a detour can be made to the grounds of the former Starkenburg. Then continue via country roads and vineyard paths into the picturesque town of Enkirch. There, the ferry is crossed and the second hill climbed. Once at the top, the former fortress ruins of Mont Royal stretch across the entire plateau, which is also worth a detour before rolling back into the Mosel valley.
From the Traben train station, cross the Mosel to Trarbach, turn left after the bridge and take the next street on the right into Enkircher Straße. Turn left onto Grabenstraße and then left again into Rathausstraße. Then turn onto Schottstraße and after 200m turn left onto an unpaved gravel path. Follow the serpentine route up to just before Grevenburg; a detour to the castle is definitely worthwhile!
Follow the paved path to the right until the next opportunity where a natural path branches off to the left. Follow this to the Himmelspforte viewpoint. From there, follow the forest path to just before the Bismarkhütte, then turn right onto a field path and continue this path to Starkenburg. Continue on the country road to Enkirch until a field path joins from the left. Descend several switchbacks to Enkirch and head towards the Mosel shore/camper parking area, where in summer the ferry crosses to Kövenig. From there, follow the road towards the Mont Royal holiday park. Upon arrival, turn left onto the K64; after passing the end of the holiday park, turn left again into the forest path and circle the fortress ruins. You will also pass the Eulenwerk viewpoint. The path emerges opposite the airfield; cross the road here and pass the airfield restaurant. The field path joins an asphalted service road; follow it until it meets Römerstraße. Turn right there and continue along Römerstraße. Then turn left into Kirchstraße and afterwards into Obere Kaiserstraße, which leads back to the station.
Please note that the route is not signposted.
Please note that the ferry in Enkirch only operates from Easter to October. In the other months, the route can be taken with a detour over the Reiler Brücke.
Always wear a helmet for your own safety.
Plan a detour to the Eulenwerk viewpoint on Mont Royal and simply enjoy the view!
