This premium hiking trail is ideal for all Moselle hikers looking to experience the most diverse landscapes over the course of one day.

Elves by the wayside, hot springs, a bishop's mitre, the mysterious Wildstein and the Graach entrenchments give this Seitensprung trail its mystical character. The paths that lead from the town of Traben-Trarbach to these striking natural and cultural monuments between the Moselle and Kautenbach are usually rather narrow. There are stunning views wherever you look. Whether you're looking down from Maria Zill or the Taubenhaus, you will enjoy magnificent views over the rooftops of Kues, Trarbach and Wildstein. The views are your reward for the often strenuous climbs and challenging altitude difference.

The Graach entrenchments are another highlight for hikers. It is a fortification built in 1794 by the Prussian army above Graach to fight off the French revolutionary armies.

General information

Directions

Starting from the Moselle car park, you walk above the roofs of the old town of Trarbach to the "Taubenhaus" vineyards. From here you can enjoy the view over Traben-Trarbach and the Moselle. You will have to climb up even higher to get to the Graach entrenchments.

You cross the B50 again via the Graach entrenchments and from there you continue for a while along a path that's parallel to the Moselsteig. You can enjoy sweeping views all the way to the Hunsrück range from one side, and catch the occasional glimpse of the Moselle river from the other side. Once you have arrived at the "Maria Zill" rest area, you are rewarded with magnificent views of Bernkastel-Kues and the surrounding villages.

Now you walk downhill along a farm road. There is a shelter by the Alter Sportplatz (old sports ground) in Kautenbach, where you can take a break and relax. The "Bischofsmütze" viewing platform is not far from the shelter. From here you continue at a leisurely pace along forest paths to the Traben-Trarbach Moselle thermal baths past the Red Springs and the Elfenpfad path. Be careful crossing the road because visibility is poor here. Now you have to muster your strength one more time for the last ascent up Ungsberg mountain. Once there, you are rewarded with a view of Traben-Trarbach before continuing your hike along the mountain ridge to the Protestant Church. You then walk along the cobbled pavements of the alleyways of Trarbach's old town and return to the Moselle car park where you started out.
