This premium hiking trail is ideal for all Mosel hikers who want to experience the most diverse landscapes on a day trip.
Elves along the wayside, hot springs, a bishop's mitre, the mysterious Wildstein, and the Graacher Schanzen give the side trip a mystical character. Often it is narrow paths that lead from the town of Traben-Trarbach to these distinctive natural and cultural monuments between Mosel and Kautenbach. Spectacular views are common. Whether from Maria Zill or the Taubenhaus, the roofs of Kues, Trarbach, and Wildstein lie almost at the hiker's feet. This justifies the sometimes strenuous ascents and the elevation meters to be overcome.
With the Graacher Schanzen, a cultural highlight is offered to the hiker. It is a fortification built in 1794 by the Prussian army above Graach to fend off the French revolutionary armies.
From the Mosel parking lot, it goes over the roofs of the old town of Trarbach directly into the vineyard location "Taubenhaus." From here, you enjoy the view over Traben-Trarbach and the Mosel. Further elevation meters are hiked until you reach the Graacher Schanzen.
Through a path, you cross the B50 new road over the Graacher Schanzen and then hike a section parallel to the Moselsteig. Here you can enjoy wide views deep into the Hunsrück on one side, while on the other side, you can repeatedly catch glimpses of the Mosel. Upon arrival at the rest point "Maria Zill," a wonderful view of Bernkastel-Kues and the surrounding villages is offered.
Via a farm road, it goes downhill a few elevation meters. Arriving at the old sports field in Kautenbach, you can take a cozy break in the shelter here. Shortly after the shelter, you reach the viewpoint "Bischofsmütze." From here, it comfortably goes past the Red Springs and the Elf trail on forest paths to the Moseltherme Traben-Trarbach. Be careful when crossing the street; the road is not well visible. From here, you have to gather your strength one last time to master the final ascent to Ungsberg. Once there, you are rewarded with the view of Traben-Trarbach and hike along the ridge to the Protestant church. Over cobblestones, it goes through alleyways into the old town of Trarbach and back to the starting point at the Mosel parking lot.
No special safety instructions.
Depending on the weather conditions, hiking boots are recommended.
Those who have tired feet at the end can relax in the Moseltherme, the only thermal spa on the Mosel.
