This square is named after the Belgian town of Harelbeke, with which Kinheim is twinned on friendly terms.

The origins of this friendship, which was forged through the fire brigades of the two towns, go back to 1961, when the Kinheim fire chief Herrmann Kaufmann came into contact with Lieutenant Jan Libbrecht from Harelbeke during the West Flemish Summer Congress of Fire Brigades and organised a trip by the Harelbeke fire brigade to Kinheim, which took place in September 1962. In the years that followed, this visit led to the development of strong friendships between Kinheim and Harelbeke ‘fire brigade families’, in which fire chief Klaus Schäfer and his deputy Willi Zender played a major role on the German side.

On the initiative of Harelbek mayor Luc Decavele, the friendship between the two towns was finally sealed at a political level. He and the mayor of Kinheim, Willy Mathy, signed the partnership certificate on 28 June 1997 at a ceremony in the town hall in Harelbeke.

As an outward sign of the partnership, this square was officially renamed ‘Harelbeke Square’ on 1 May 2012 as part of the celebrations to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the friendship between the two fire services on the initiative of the local mayor Jens Stamm.
