Sucellus

  • Kinheim-Kindel

The figure, carved from coarse, yellowish sandstone, depicts the bearded god wearing a wrapped garment with Gallic trousers.

In September 1976, during the excavation of a Roman villa not far from here, this sandstone relief of the Gallo-Roman protector god Sucellus from the second half of the 3rd century was found.

The figure, carved from coarse, yellowish sandstone, depicts the bearded god in an apron with Gallic trousers. In his right hand, he holds the named hammer, as Sucellus means "the one who strikes well." With the help of this hammer, the hoops were driven onto the barrel staves at that time, making it clear that Sucellus is the protector god of coopers.

However, a special feature is the bunch of grapes that he holds in the folds of his robe in front of his chest. This uniquely indicates that Sucellus is also a protector god of winemakers. Unlike the Neumagen wine ship, which comes from the tomb of a wine merchant, the figure of Sucellus is, from an archaeological perspective, "the only relief from the Middle Moselle that can certainly be associated with local winemaking."

Therefore, this find is a significant monument for Kinheim and the entire Moselle region, as it undoubtedly proves that wine was already being cultivated here during the Roman era.
