At the Moselle riverbank near the Pünderich ferry, take the stairs up to Marienburg and continue across the Moselle Heights back to Reil.
This tour takes you past the Pünderich hillside viaduct, one of the longest of its kind in Europe, to the Pünderich ferry. From the riverbank, a staircase (440 steps!) leads up to Marienburg.
You then cross the Moselle Heights to reach the Prinzenkopf observation tower and the Pünderich war cemetery. The way back leads between forest and vineyards, past the Drieschhütte and across the Reiler Hals to Reil.
The Moselle reveals itself again and again along the route – the views are postcard-worthy throughout. The Drieschhütte is usually open on weekends during the hiking season. Don't forget your camera!
Starting at the Bibadeplatz in Reil, the route follows the paved cycle path along the Moselle River to the Pünderich ferry. From there, it gets challenging: 440 steps lead steeply up to Marienburg (note: no food service available!).
If that's too strenuous, simply continue along the cycle path toward Briedel and take the first left to climb a more moderate slope. Once at the top, turn left to reach Marienburg (the final stretch is also steep, but without steps).
The trail continues along the ridge to the Prinzenkopf lookout tower, then descends on a forest path to the war cemetery. A woodland trail leads to the Drieschhütte (rest stop), then the path winds between forest and vineyards back over the Reiler Hals to Reil.
Plenty of parking is available under the Reil bridge.
Please note: The first part of the tour along the Moselle to the Pünderich ferry follows a busy cycle route. Please ride carefully and be mindful of other cyclists.
Marienburg and the Prinzenkopf Tower offer unique views of the Moselle Valley, the Moselle bend at Zeller Hamm, and the impressive Pünderich hillside viaduct.
