This half-day tour shows you the cultural history of the region, taking you to historical places with spectacular views of the Moselle valley.

As you follow the footsteps of the wine god Sucellus and the Brethren of the Common Life, this Seitensprung trail takes you along narrow forest paths to stunning vantage points, historical sites and idyllic paths along the Gluckerter stream.

The 12.1-kilometre circular tour takes you past the remains of a Roman mill, the Wolf monastery ruins and the remains of a Roman villa, bringing the rich wine and cultural history of the Moselle to life.

The monastery in Wolf affords spectacular views into the river valley and one of the most well-known Moselle bends and famous vineyard locations.

The starting and finishing point of the hike, the charming wine village of Kinheim with its historical old town, is itself worth exploring.

General information

Directions

From the car park of the "Am Römerhang" barbecue site above Kinheim's Kindel district you walk through the forest to a small shelter past magnificent vantage points. Wooden bridges take you across the Gluckerter stream. Downstream and upstream from the Gluckerter bridge, carved into rock, you will find the remains of Roman mills; the villa the mills belonged to used to stand on the ridge of the mountain. Then you continue uphill to the monastery ruin of Wolf (Wolfer Klosterruine). The "Liebfrauenkirche auf dem Göckelsberg" (Church of Our Lady on Göckelsberg mountain), the official name of the monastery in Wolf, is one of the oldest parish churches on the Moselle. From 1478, the "Brethren of the Common Life", or "Kogelherren" in German, lived here. From here you enjoy stunning views of the Moselle valley and the famous wine village of Kröv, the home of the Kröver Nacktarsch wine. You continue towards Wolf, a town located on one of the most striking Moselle bends. Here, the "Kleinforst" rest area is a great place to take a break. You pass the Mühlenbachtal valley of Wolf, and then the Seitensprung trail takes you past fire ponds, butterfly habitats, forest meadows and orchard meadows. Once you have climbed the Moselsporn you slowly make your way back down into the valley through woodland and vineyards, past an excavation site with the remains of a Roman villa, the site of the Gallo-Roman tutelary god Sucellus, before reaching your starting point.
