The trekking tour can be done in daily stages, with three trekking campsites available for overnight stays.
Plan for four days and three nights to complete the entire tour. This trekking route lets you experience all the landscapes our natural surroundings have to offer: you’ll hike through shady forests, scenic valleys, vineyards, and rolling meadows. Most of the route runs away from civilization – passing through villages offers a chance to refill your water and supplies.
Please note: this is a challenging trekking tour designed for overnighting at three designated nature campsites. We haven’t marked the camping spots on the map to prevent vandalism. You’ll receive the GPS coordinates once your booking is confirmed.
Stage 1: Traben Train Station – Platform "Weitsicht"
It’s a good idea to stock up on water and supplies near the train station – there are two supermarkets nearby. Cross the bridge into Trarbach and walk through the charming old town. You can refill your water bottles at the public fountain in the square below the Protestant church. Then begins the steep ascent through the vineyards, following the slope until you reach Moseltherme. From here, the path becomes shaded as you enter the mystical Kautenbach Valley. The trail leads along beautiful narrow forest paths past the spectacular “Bischofsmütze” rock formation. Not far from there lies the trekking platform "Weitsicht".
Stage 2: Platform "Weitsicht" – Platform "In den Weinbergen"
From the platform, you continue uphill through the Kautenbach Valley to the Graacher Schanzen highlands. Cross the new B50 highway and follow the Moselsteig Trail, which offers breathtaking views over the Moselle Valley. At the rest point “Maria Zill”, enjoy the stunning panorama of Bernkastel-Kues and its surroundings. A small path crosses back over the B50 and leads you through meadows and fields into another forest section. You then hike along vineyard slopes, almost reaching your next destination: the trekking platform "In den Weinbergen".
Stage 3: Platform "Weitsicht" – Campsite "Unter den Obstbäumen"
From the platform, follow part of the Kluckertspfad Trail, then pass through the wine village Wolf, part of Traben-Trarbach. Cross the Moselle and hike steeply up into the vineyard area Wolfer Goldgrube. At the top, a short detour to the Landal holiday park is worth it for restocking supplies at the park shop. Pass the Berkapelle chapel, then climb Kröver Berg, cross the K62 road, and walk through meadows and forest into Bengel. From there, it’s just a short distance to the idyllic natural campsite “Unter den Obstbäumen.”
Stage 4: Campsite "Unter den Obstbäumen" – Reil Train Station
From the campsite, walk to Springiersbach Monastery, then continue through forest to the B49 road. One last climb awaits, but it’s rewarded with an amazing view from Reiler Hals over the Moselle Valley. The path winds down through vineyards to Reil train station. If you have time and energy, walk into Reil’s village center – there are several restaurants and cafés.
Short on time? You can also end your tour in Bengel and take the train from there.
No open fires may be lit on the ‘Weitsicht’ and ‘Wolfspfad’ trekking sites. At the ‘Unter den Obstbäumen’ trekking site, please observe the notices on the current forest fire risk.
Please observe these regulations and consider alternatives for preparing your food.
